Chapter 2 Sadhana (Practice) Karma and Kriya Yoga: the yoga of sanctification
and purification of God inside of us.

Sutra 5
Anityasuci-duhkhanatmansu nityasuci-sukhama-skyatir avidya

Translations of words

Anitya impermanent
Asuci impure
Duhki pain
Anatmanu in the non-self
Nitya eternal
Suci pure
Sukha happiness
Atma self
Khyatih identification, naming
Avidya absence of self-awareness

Avidya-absence of self-awareness, is an identification of permanence in the
impermanent, purity in impurity, happiness in pain, and self in non-self.

Comments:

“memory interference causes distortion of the field (belief in a self which
is not one’s own
True self, in happiness which is really pain.”

“When in a state of ignorance, man mistakes what is mundane for what is
Supreme.”
“He cannot differentiate between that which will bring pain, the mind and the
body, and that which will bring immortality.”
Swami Vishnu

What has God in it, and dwells in God, is real, and exists for its own sake
while bringing happiness and immortality to itself and others.

What does not have God in it, but, only, illusion, has to seek purpose and
meaning outside itself. And, this makes things very difficult both for
ourselves, and also, God who is trying to help us. Andrew

Sutra 6

Drg-darsana-saktyor ekatmatevasmita

Translation of words
Drk seer
Darsana seeing
Saktyoh of the two powers
Eka-atmata single identity (one-self-ness)
Iva like,seemingly
Asmita sense of “I am”

The sense of “I am” is the seeming single identity of the two (distinct)
powers of the seer and the act of seeing (something).
“Distortion is accompanied by a limited sense of “I”

Comments:

“Egotism is manifest when the individual cannot distinguish his Self from his
senses and mind.” Swami Vishnu

“Egotism is the identification of the soul (Purusa) or Pure Consciousness
with the intellect (Buddhi)”. Swami Hariharananda

Christ in our soul is absolute awareness, while the intellect is the
instrument of knowing, looking on these two as the same is egotism. Swami
Hariharananda and Andrew

Christ/God is the absolute consciousness (I AM) of the relative consciousness
( I am). Andrew

Sutra 7

Sukhanusayi ragah

Translation of words:
Sukha happinees
Anusayi having, possessing the result
Ragah attachment

Ragah-attachment is holding on to (prior) happiness

“Attachment is compulsion to repeat pleasure.”

Comments:

The good life can be attained by awareness of impermance, desiring
compassionate participation with what exists for its own sake, openness to
change, and self-realization with God’s help.. Andrew

“Attachment is that which always dwells on pleasure.”
“When (pleasures are) associated with objects of the material world they
inevitably bring pain. Nothing in the physical world is permanent.” Swami
Vishnu.

Sutra 8

Duhkhanusayi dvesah

Translation of Words:
Duhkha pain
Anusayi having, possessing the result
Dvesah dislike

Dvesa-dislike is holding on to (prior) pain.

Dislike is resistance to repeating pain.

Comments:

“Aversion is that which attempts to avert pain”
“We must learn how to be content in all situations and surrender to the
Lord’s plan for our growth.” Swami Vishnu

Pain is a part of life and can never be ender (destroyed) completely.
But,with God’s help, it can be defeated and hence only a temporary problem.

Sutra 18
Heyam duhkham anagatam

Translation of words:
Heyam to be ended,avoidable
Duhkham pain
Anagatam not come, future

Pain, not yet come, is to be ended (heya).

Pain is a part of life, it can never be destroyed (ended) completely. But, it
can be defeated.

Sutra 17

Drastr-drsyayoh sanygo heya-hutuh

Translation of words:
Drastr seer
Drsyayoh of what is to be seen, the seeable
Sanyogah correlation
Heya to be ended
Hetuh cause

The cause of heya-what is to be ended, is the sanyoga-correlation between the
drastr-seer and the drsya-the seeable.

Comments:

The cause of what is to be created is God’s Love.

Sutra 22
Tad-artha eva drsyasyatma

Translation of words:
Tad that(seer)
Arthah purpose
Eva only, solely
Drsyasya the seeable
Atma nature, existence

The existence of drsya-the seeable, is solely for the purpose of that (drastr-
seer)

Comments:
And, also for the purpose of God realization and His glorification through us.

Sutra 24

Tasya hetur avidya

Translations of words:
Tasya of that (sanyoga)
Hetuh cause
Avidya unawareness

The cause of that (sanyoga-correlation) is avidya-absense of self-awareness.

Comments:
“The absence of the alliance of Buddhi (intellect) and soul (Purusa), which
is the cause of the correlation between seer and the seen is Freedom
(Salvation), the state of liberation of the seer.” Swami Hariharananda

In Christian terms this is saying, basically, that salvation and liberation
from death comes not through the intellect but what is helping the intellect
to understand(the soul’s divine superconscious mind). So my God and I assert
that faith in addition to awareness is needed here. “I AM the eternal God,
underneath are the everlasting arms.” “Be still and know I AM”
Andrew

Sutra 25
Tad-abhavat sanyogabhavo hanam tad-drseh kaivalyma

Translation of Words:
Tad that
Abhavat owing to the disappearance
Sanyoga correlation
Abhavah disappearance
Hanam end (of the pain to be ended –haya)
Tat that
Drseh of seeing
Kaivalyam alonenesss

Owing to the disappearance of that (avidya-absence of self-awareness) there
is the disappearance of the sanyoga-correlation, the hana-end(of what is to
be ended-heya). That is kaivalya-the aloneness of seeing.
“Awareness alone removes the limited sense of I” Vyasa

Comments:
“The means of destroying ignorance (avidya) is unbroken discrimination.”
Swami Vishnu

“Awareness and faith are reflections of two Truths.” Andrew Poem about the
One Buddha who is God’s Son Christ Jesus
